Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States Rebuilding Lives After Katrina

(Washington, DC) – Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States region donated $25,000 to the local NBC4 Hurricane Katrina Fundraiser: Rebuilding Lives. Over $478,000 was raised during the telethon to benefit the National Capital Chapters of the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army. Hosted by Tim Russert from Meet the Press and local news anchors Jim Vance and Doreen Gentzler, the telethon was a commercial-free hour on the Washington, DC NBC affiliate taking place on Monday, September 12, 2005 from 7:00pm-8:00pm.

Presenting the check for Kaiser Permanente were Marilyn Kawamura, president of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States, Inc., and Philip S. Carney, Jr., MD, president and medical director of Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, P.C.

“We’d like to say thank you to NBC4 for providing this opportunity to support the local relief efforts. We at Kaiser Permanente are happy to be a part of this effort to "rebuild lives" and would like to present a check for $25,000 from the Mid-Atlantic Region,” informed Ms. Kawamura.

“Also, we are proud to present a second check from the staff and physicians at our Manassas Medical Center for $400. Instead of having a facility-wide luncheon they wanted to donate the funds to Katrina relief,” said Dr. Carney. “On a national level Kaiser Permanente has already pledged three million dollars to fund hurricane relief efforts in the Gulf Coast region. Two million dollars from Kaiser Permanente went to launch the CDC Foundation’s Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund and another million will be used for long-term relief efforts.”

Ms. Kawamura concluded, “We wish you best of luck with the telethon and encourage other large organizations in the DC metro area to get their pledges in.”

Manning the phone lines were Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich and his wife, Kendel, former Senator of Louisiana, John Breaux, former Representative from Louisiana, Billy Tauzin, local sports figures, and other on-air celebrities including Nora O’Donnell, Steve Handelsman, and Willard Scott.
